Kodiak High School’s boys and girls track squads both won the Kodiak Tri-Invitational over the weekend against visiting teams from Juneau-Douglas and Palmer. The boys had 171 points to Palmer’s 145, and Juneau’s 99. The girls had 178 points to beat second place Juneau’s 157 and third place Palmer with 80.
Junior Trevor Dunbar led the way for the Bears, breaking the two-minute mark in the 800 meters for the first time in his career, finishing in 1 minute 56-point-26 seconds. Dunbar set the meet record by two seconds, and edged Palmer’s Kevin Smith, who finished second in the 800 with a time of 1 minute 56-point-72 seconds. Dunbar also won the 1600 and 3200 meters, and was named Athlete of the Meet.
Kodiak’s Michael Odell also had a strong performance, winning the 100 meters in 11-point-3 seconds, and the 200 meters in 23-point-6 seconds. Odell also won the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 42-point-24 seconds, and broke the meet record in the shot put by throwing it 50 feet 2 inches.
On the girls’ side, Kodiak’s Linzee Burcham won the 100 meters in 13-point-4 seconds, as well as the 200 meters in 28-point-07 seconds. Burcham also anchored the girls’ winning 4 by 400 meter relay and hit the 5-foot mark in the high jump to take that event. For her efforts, Burcham was voted Female Athlete of the Meet.
Chloe Ivanoff won the girls’ 800-meter race, setting a personal record time of 2 minutes 29-point-57 seconds.
Next weekend the Bears will travel to Palmer for the Region III 4A Championship Meet where the boys will try to defend their 2007 title and the girls will shoot for their first title since the late 1980’s.
