Bears Sweep Region III Meet

Jay Barrett/KMXT

The Kodiak High School Bears made a clean sweep of the Region Three Track and Field championships in Palmer over the weekend. The girls scored 116 points to easily outpace Colony’s 102 and Wasilla’s 76. Skyview was fourth and Palmer was fifth.

The boys’ championship was a little harder to come by, as it was won on the last lap of the last event by Andy Dittman, who edged out Palmer’s Kevin Smith by a nose for second place in the 16-hundred relay. With those points, Kodiak finished with two more than Colony, 129 to 127. If the Bears had finished third in that race, Kodiak and Colony would have tied for the title. Palmer was third with 120 points. Kenai was fourth and Soldotna fifth.

It’s the third straight regional title for the Kodiak boys, who are also the defending state champions, and it is the first championship for the Kodiak girls in over two decades.
