Summer Fun Activities

School is out, so now what are you going to do to entertain your child this summer? Around Kodiak, there are plenty of fun and safe activities to keep kids busy and out of trouble. Mary Donaldson has more.

Kodiak summers find some kids looking to fill their days with activities. Businesses and organizations around town offer many summer camps and activities for children of all ages to participate in.

The Kodiak Wildlife Refuge has a Families Understanding Nature Program, or “FUN”, run by Liz Appleby, the environmental educator there. She says that Wednesdays are geared towards three-to-five-year-olds and Saturday activities are geared towards six-to-nine-year-olds.

Both age groups start at 10:30 in the morning.

For children grades K through 8, there are numerous art activities scheduled throughout summer put on by the Kodiak Arts Council and the Kodiak Island Borough. Natasha Pristas is the coordinator for the Sum’ Arts fine arts program this summer and says many forms of arts will be taught.

Ian Fulp, the director of the City of Kodiak’s Parks and Recreation, says they offer many athletic activities for kids of all ages.

Fulp says their circus camp is going on right now and will have a finale show at 6:30 Friday evening at the North Star Gym.

Kelly Foreman, the summer camp director for the Kodiak Baptist Mission says along with nature camps, they have several fun and original activities for kids in grades one through 8.

All summer activities at the Baptist Mission run through August 22^nd.

There will also be vacation bible schools going on later this summer at various churches around town. Camp Woody will be taking groups of kids over Woody Island for week long camping and activities beginning in July. The Native Village of Afognak offers “Dig Afognak” camps starting this month and going on through the end of July that take place on Afognak Island.
