At about 4:30 this (Thursday) morning a resident on Selief Lane shot a young female bear that was trying to get into his home. Fish and Game’s Larry Van Daele said the bear, estimated to be 3-4 years old, had gained access to a utility room where garbage was stored a couple weeks ago while the homeowner was out fishing.

Early this morning the bear began clawing at a cat-door and sticking its head inside the home. The resident shot and killed the bear from his bedroom window above the door with a 12-gauge shotgun slug.

Van Daele said that he doesn’t know for sure, but he suspects this bear is one of the several that have been raiding freezers and garages in the Lakeview area this summer.

Van Daele said fish and game retrieved the bear carcass and is storing it with the intention of using it for a bear skinning demonstration during the State Fair next month.
