The Kodiak Relay For Life fundraiser is taking place this weekend, benefiting the American Cancer Society. Mary Donaldson has the details.

Mandy Clark is the event chair for the second annual Relay For Life fundraiser. She says this year’s event has about 21 teams of eight to 15 people each signed up to walk around the track at Baranof field for 24 hours starting at 6 p.m.

(Clark 1:14s“…American Cancer Society.”)

She says the events kick off with an opening ceremony

(Clark 2:20s“…having people on the track.”)

Clark says there will also be a candle-lit ceremony at midnight to honor, celebrate, or remember those who have battled cancer.

(Clark 3:22s“…somber and celebratory.”)

Another creative fundraising activity will be the quarter mile.

(Clark 4:28s“…complete a quarter mile.”)

She says this will be Kodiak Relay For Life’s first 24 hour, outdoor event. Last year’s was only 18 hours and was held indoors in the high school and the middle school. Clark says the community is invited to come and attend, participate, or to cheer on the walkers in the relay, rain or shine. There will also be a live auction scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday in the basketball court area at Baranof Park. All proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society.

I’m Mary Donaldson.
