One of Kodiak’s harbors is currently receiving upgrades, and they could be done by as early as next summer. Mary Donaldson has this update on the construction currently being done in Saint Herman Harbor.
Construction work going on in Saint Herman Harbor is ahead of schedule says Lon White, the deputy harbormaster. He says the upgrades include replacing the “M” and “P” floats in the harbor.

The original date for completion of the work was scheduled for the end of September.
The docks can currently house larger boats in Kodiak’s fleet, but the upgrades will make the new floats more accommodating for them.

He says the upgrades are important because the Port of Kodiak has always been an important hub for fishing vessels, and now with the high price of fuel, it will be even more attractive to cost-conscience boat owners.

Along with the new floats, White says the other amenities planned for the harbor on Near Island are also on schedule. The 600-ton travel lift for the large boats should be completed by April, and construction of the adjacent ship yard should be completed shortly afterwards. He says the upgrades will bring more money and business into town.

Bidding is currently open for the ship yard work and will close sometime next week. A fully operational ship yard with haul-out capabilities are estimated to be done by as early as next summer.
