KMXT 100.1 FM Public Radio in Kodiak, Alaska
The United States Department of Health and Social Services recently announced grant awards for some medical facilities in town. The money received was a part of the department’s series of funding to Alaska programs and communities. Mary Donaldson has more.
Kodiak Area Native Association, or KANA, received 100-thousand dollars in federal grant money for cancer screening initiatives from the Indian Health Service. Anita Bailor, KANA’s finance director says this is the third year KANA’s received the grant.

Tammy Hansen is KANA’s health director and says the grant money will be used to increase early cancer screenings.

Bailor says these kinds of screenings are important, especially for Native populations.

Hanson says increasing these services through the grant will hopefully lower cancer rates, or make detection and treatment a little easier.

Providence Health System was also awarded 948-thousand dollars for rural health outreach initiatives, while the Providence Alaska Medical Center was awarded almost 190-thousand dollars for rural outreach initiatives.
