KHS Spikers Open Season With Losses On The Road

The Kodiak High Volleyball team dropped a pair of close conference matches to the Wasilla Warriors this past weekend up on the mainland.

Kodiak Coach Rick Carman says it was disappointing to start the season by dropping two matches, but he felt like the team improved with each game.

Volleyball takes on Kenai this coming weekend in its first home matches of the year.

On Friday, the Bears started slow losing 25-8 in the first game. But the team gained momentum in the second match, winning 14-25. The third game was a close one with the Warriors eventually overcoming the Bears late, 25-21. The fourth game was the closest of the night as the teams exchanged points and the lead several times. In the end the Warriors won the game 30-28.

The battle carried over to Saturday afternoon as the two teams squared off in another conference match. The Bears dropped two close games in the beginning 25-23; 25-21 but battled back to take the next 2 games 16-25; 19-25. The fifth and deciding game of the match started with the Bears down by four points. Despite battling back to tie the game, Kodiak eventually fell to Wasilla 14-16.
