It was a mixed bag of results for the Kodiak High School Bears this weekend. Volleyball and Cross Country did well, while the football team was blanked.

In volleyball, the Skyview Panthers lost to the visiting Kodiak spikers on Friday 25-21, 25-17, 19-25 and 25-17. The Bears continued their dominance on the peninsula Saturday, downing Homer in three straight sets, 25-23, 25-19 and 25-13.

At the Lynx Cross Country Invitational at Anchorage’s Kincaid Park, Trevor Dunbar led the Kodiak boys to a slim team victory, as he breezed to another easy win. Dunbar set a personal best on the five kilometer course of 15 minutes 17-point-9 seconds. Teammate Sam Salus was second, 50-seconds behind. Dylan Anthony was fifth in 16-25. The Kodiak boys edged Service 72-to-73 for the team title.

Kodiak’s Chloe Ivanoff was fourth in the girls’ race, with a time of 19-minutes 45-point-7 seconds. She was the only Bear in the top 25. The team finished 11th with 248 points. West Anchorage won the meet with 92. See below for a list of all Kodiak finishers.

On the gridiron, the Bears started slow both offensively and defensively in an away game against the Palmer Moose. Kodiak gave up rushing touchdowns in both the first and second quarters and lost 14-to-0. While the Bears kept the Moose out of the end zone in the second half, Palmer held Kodiak to just 92 yards passing and only 29 on the ground.

Despite playing out of conference, the Bears have clinched a play off spot, due to results elsewhere in the Northern Lights Conference. Kodiak will host its toughest opponent of the year in the homecoming game on Saturday, when the Soldotna Stars visit Joe Floyd Field. The Stars, like the Bears are 3-and-0 in conference play after trouncing cross-town rival Skyview 67-to-nothing on Friday.
