Without the state’s top distance runner, the Kodiak High School cross country teams still managed a solid showing at the Palmer Invitational over the weekend.
Trevor Dunbar, a senior and the reigning state individual champion, was busy checking out colleges this weekend. But fellow Senior Sam Salus picked up the slack, finishing second in the varsity 5-kilometer race with a time of 16 minutes 12 seconds. Aaron Fletcher, a senior from South Anchorage, had the winning time of 15 minutes 56 seconds. Kodiak Junior Dylan Anthony came in third, finishing 9 seconds behind teammate Salus in 16 minutes 21 seconds.
As a team, the Bears finished third overall in the boys’ race with 109 team points. Service High was number one with 41 points, and West Valley was number two with 91.
On the girls’ side, Junior Chloe Ivanoff was Kodiak’s top finisher. Ivanoff’s time of 19 minutes 32 seconds was good enough for third in the race. Service High School’s Esther Kennedy was first in 19 minutes 10 seconds, while Christie Schmitz from North Pole finished second in 19 minutes 27 seconds. Other girls finishers for the Bears included Jaymi Bethea, who came in 48th in 21 minutes 17 seconds, and Amelia Egle who was 75th with a time of 22 minutes 6 seconds.
Kodiak’s girls finished 11th, with the top three spots in team competition going to West Anchorage, Service and West Valley.
The Bears cross country teams are scheduled to take part in the T & C Classic at 4:30 Thursday afternoon at Baranof Park. The event is a warm up for Saturday’s action at the Lynx Invitational in Anchorage, host by Dimond High School.
