Just when you thought Kodiak High School cross country star Trevor Dunbar couldn’t get any better, he proves you wrong.
The Bears were in Portland, Oregon Saturday for the Adidas Classic, where Dunbar finished first overall with a new course record time of 14:47. Not only did Dunbar crush the competition from Oregon, Washington and California schools, his time is the fastest 5K race for any high schooler in the nation so far this season.
In a story on cross country website Dyestat dot COM, Dunbar was typically humble, saying “Cross country is really not about time, it’s about different courses and testing yourself against other guys. Still, it’s awesome to have that as a stat. It gives a little more recognition, not only to myself, but also my team and the whole state. It’s really exciting.”
Other Bears runners had strong races as well. Sam Salus finished seventh with a time of 15:44 and Dylan Anthony was ninth in 15:48. Chaven Davidson, Corey Munk, and James Osowski finished 97th, 98th, and 99th.
As a team Kodiak took fifth overall. Portland’s Jesuit High School was first with its top five finishers going 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, and 14th.
On the girls’ side, Chloe Ivanoff was the Bears top finisher in 18:44, taking 10th overall. Christy Roe and Jenni Fried came in 90th and 91st with times of 21:31 and 21:34 respectively.
Having only three girls at the meet left the Lady Bears out of the team scoring competition. But all three of Kodiak’s girls got new personal records.
Dunbar is a senior and has been checking out colleges this fall. One school on his list is the University of Oregon Ducks, currently the number one cross country team in the nation.
