Griffing, Wandersee Lead Way at State Swimming/Diving meet

It was a busy weekend for Kodiak High School athletes. The Robin Hervey Wrestling Tournament was held here at home, the volleyball team won a berth to state, and the swimming and diving team boasts two state champions.

First to the pool: Laura Griffing won her second consecutive state title in the 100- yard breaststroke in a time of 1-minute 6-point-08-secondsat the station championships held at Anchorage’s Bartlett High. Meanwhile, Scott Wandersee ran away with the state title in 1-meter diving, with over 445 points. Other individual and relay results are below.
Overall, the Kodiak girls placed third with 59 points, behind Service’s 121. East Anchorage was second. Chugiak was fourth with Ketchikan fifth. The Kodiak boys were fourth with 58 points. Juneau won with 102, followed by Dimond and Wasilla. North Pole was fifth.

Up in Kenai, the Bears were second in the Northern Lights Conference volleyball tournament, after losing the championship match to the Colony Knights three games to one. The Skyview Panthers were third, and will also make the trip north for the state championship next weekend.
Linzee Burcham and Maureen Sabado were named First Team All-Tournament, while Rachel Norton was named Second Team. Emily Garner was named to the Good Sport Team.

Here at home, the Robin Hervey Wrestling Tournament saw the host Bears win two weight classes and the overall title, though the Bethel Warriors gave them a run for their money. Kodiak won the team title with 190 points, to Bethel’s 178. Nick Van Matre (meter) took top honors at 135 pounds, while Gary Anthony won the 171-pound class. Both won by pins.
