Bears Fall in Joe Floyd Openers

The Chevak Comets and the South Anchorage Wolverines didn’t make it in on time Thursday for the 42nd Annual Joe Floyd Christmas Basketball Tournament, which threw the schedule into disarray. Three, instead of four, games were played, with the Homer Mariner girls winning a late opener against the Petersburg Vikings 38-37.

The hometown teams lost a couple of heartbreakers on opening night.

The Kodiak High School girls made a valiant attempt near the end of the game, but ran out of time against the Nome Nanooks, and fell 33 to 29.

The boys game between the Bears and the Vikings was a back-and-forth affair, and was closer than the 52 to 45 final would indicate.

The schedule today had South and Chevak playing a make-up game at 10:30 a.m., and the Nome and Homer girls playing at 12:45. At 3:15 the South and Petersburg boys will play. The Kodiak boys hit the hardwood at 5 against Chevak, followed by the Kodiak girls against Petersburg in the 7 p.m. night cap.

Saturday’s schedule is the only one of the three days to remain unchanged – so far. The Nome and Petersburg girls play at high noon, followed by the Petersburg and Chevak boys at 1:45. The Kodiak girls will take on Homer at 3:30 p.m. and the boys will play South at 5:30 p.m. to wrap up the three-day tournament.

All games are played at the Kodiak High School gym, and the Bears games will be broadcast by our friends over at KVOK.
