Missile Defense Agency plans launch

Jay Barrett/KMXT

The Missile Defense Agency is planning another launch of a target drone from Kodiak sometime in the next week. As it does before all launches, the Coast Guard has established a safety zone down range from the Kodiak Launch Complex.

The zones are in four places: One around Narrow Cape, where the launch pad is, and nearby Ugak Island. Another is about 90 miles southeast of Kodiak Island, where the first stage of the ballistic missile is expected to splash into the ocean. The third and fourth stages will come back to earth well down range, off the coast of the Lower 48.

Safety zones are in effect from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday through next Monday, or until cancelled, either because of a launch or a scrub. The penalties for entering the safety zones include fines up to 32,500-dollars. Contact the Coast Guard for specific latitude and longitude coordinates.
