Three Kodiak Residents Reappointed to State Commissions

Three Kodiak residents have been reappointed to a pair of state commissions by Governor Sarah Palin. Gary Carver and Laura Kelly had their terms on the Alaska Seismic Hazards Safety Commission extended, while Iver Malutin’s term on the Alaska Commission on Aging was likewise renewed.

The seismic commission is responsible for advising the governor, Legislature and private businesses on policies for seismic hazard mitigation and disaster preparedness, and on when to issue seismic hazard warnings.

Carver is a private consulting geologist who has served in the public seat on the commission since 2005. He once worked for the Museum of the Aleutians in Dutch Harbor and was a professor of geology at Humboldt State for 25 years. Kelly is a civilian engineer who works for ISC Kodiak. KMXT profiled Kelly last month after she was named the national Coast Guard Engineer of the Year. She has also served on the commission since 2005, filling the federal agency seat.

The 11-member commission on aging makes recommendations to the governor and Legislature with respect to legislation, regulations, and appropriations for programs and services that benefit older Alaskans.

Malutin has served on the commission since 2005, after being appointed to a public seat. A retired fisherman, he works for the Kodiak Area Native Association and sits on its board of directors.
