KMXT 100.1 FM Public Radio in Kodiak, Alaska
The Afognak Native Corporation announced the renaming of a mountain on Afognak Island near Muskomee Bay in honor of the first Alaska Native to serve as Commissioner of the Department of Public Safety and Director of the Alaska State Troopers.
Glenn G. Godfrey became director of the troopers in 1995 before being appointed Commissioner of the Department of Public Safety in 2000 by then Governor Tony Knowles. He served in the top post for almost two years before his death in 2002.
The new name, Godfrey Mountain, was approved by the U.S. Geological Survey on Geographic Names in December.
Megan Peters of the Department of Public Safety in Anchorage said the Native corporation was responsible for the push to have the mountain renamed in Godfrey’s honor and that the corporation’s Board of Directors recently informed the department of the honor.

Peters said the honor is a fitting tribute to one of the department’s historic leaders and one who contributed a greatly to the organization during his time there.

Godfrey Mountain is located 13 miles north of Old Afognak village on the southwestern coast of Afognak Island just north of Kodiak Island.
