KMXT 100.1 FM Public Radio in Kodiak, Alaska
Sustainable Kodiak held its meeting Thursday evening at the Kodiak Refuge Visitors Center. The theme of the evening was "reduce, reuse and recycle" and how that affects the Kodiak community. On hand at the meeting were representatives from several different local organizations, who made presentations and took questions on a variety of topics ranging from garbage to recycling to marine debris cleanup.
Andy Schroeder is the executive director of Island Trails Network, which among other things, conducts large-scale beach cleanups and attempts to find creative ways of disposing of the waste. Over the past year, Island Trails has removed thousands of pounds of marine debris from Long Island, Shuyak and Afognak Islands in cooperation with various volunteer groups.

KEA’s Jennifer Richcreek spoke at the meeting about reducing diesel fuel consumption. She also said people can monitor their energy usage simply by referring to their monthly electric bill.

Also speaking at the meeting were representatives from the Kodiak Island Borough’s environmental division, as well as Threshold Recycling Services and Rural Community Assistance Corporation. The meeting took place in panel format, providing for a question and answer session with all of the presenters.
