State Seeks Input on Winter Ferry Schedule

Kodiak’s primary ferry, the Tustumena, will be out of service from November through mid-April 2013 to complete a major federal improvement project. Kodiak’s other ferry, the much larger Kennicott, is slated to be in the yards for an overhaul immediately prior to that: from mid-September through to the first week of November.

The State Department of Transportation and Public Facilities is seeking public input on a proposed winter schedule that will have the Tustumena providing coverage while the Kennicott is under repair and the Kennicott serving Kodiak twice weekly while the Tustumena out of service. Officials say the schedule is similar to what Kodiak lived with this past January and February, except that it will last six months.

Officials want to hear from people and businesses that will be affected by the shuffled ferry schedules. Written comments need to be received by Thursday, March 22. A teleconference to discuss the plan and to take verbal comments is scheduled for Tuesday, March 27.
