The Kodiak Area Native Association recently passed a rigorous survey to gain accreditation for medical services as well some other specialty services.

KANA provides physical and mental aid to the people of Kodiak and Island communities in various capacities. It also maintains Community Health Aides in Akhiok, Larsen Bay, Port Lions, Old Harbor, and Ouzinkie.

The Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care, a 35-year-old private non-profit, conducted an on-site evaluation of KANA’s outpatient facilities in February.

Tammy Hansen is the vice-president of health services for KANA and says the survey itself was a three-day process. She says the association evaluated their facilities, reviewed exam rooms and billing practices, and spoke with physicians.

“And they also followed patients from check-in through discharge,” says Hansen. “So they actually were with a patient so they could see how the patient was treated.”

Hansen says that the board started getting ready for the survey in 2011 and learned about their success on April 6th. They now join 5,000 other organizations who earned a certificate from the association.
