A bell was cast for the Russian Orthodox Church in Kodiak in 1796 and discovered in an orange grove in California over 130 years later. In 2013, a Russian bell was brought to Kodiak from California, but it wasn’t the same bell. In this episode, a Russian bell expert, Father Innocent Dresdow, and others discuss the history of Russian bells, the experience of early Russian Orthodox missionaries in Kodiak, and speculate on how and why a bell cast in Kodiak might end up at a Catholic mission in California.
