A number of frozen fruits and vegetables have been recalled due to possible contamination by listeria, which can cause serious infections in children, the elderly, or people with weakened immune systems. Some of the potentially contaminated brands include O Organics, Safeway Kitchens, and Signature Kitchens.

Michelangelo Sison, assistant manager at Safeway, says they received the list of recalls about a week to two weeks ago. He explains the packages all fall under one lot code.

“When we got that list, we went off and looked at every single frozen vegetable in our freezer on that list with that lot code and pulled every single that one we could find within our store and we also put signs up where customers can view it and it showed the list of vegetables that were infected, the lot code that’s on there.”

He says a lot code is the five digits near the expiration date on the back of the frozen package and the recalled items have a lot code of S3904. Sison asks customers who have products with that code to bring them to Safeway for refund or replacement.

“I’m also encouraging customers to just come by to the store regardless if whether it’s the lot code or not, if you’re not comfortable consuming the vegetables that they have right now in their freezer. Even if it’s not within that lot code, we will go ahead and refund it as well.”

Listeria is bacteria that can cause listeriosis, which usually includes symptoms like fever and muscle aches, and sometimes begins with gastrointestinal problems like diarrhea. The cooking and pasteurization process is known to kill listeria.
