A dog was snatched from the Kodiak Animal Shelter Monday afternoon.

Office Assistant Kara Darling says the shelter was closed when the small dog, named Chinook, was taken.

“The animal control officer was the first one that noticed it. She noticed that Chinook was not in his run. We imagine he was taken between 1 and 4 yesterday when we were out of the office. His run was outside, so someone would have had to climb the fence to get him and climb back over.”

Darling says Chinook has a family waiting for him.

“He had a family that he was supposed to go to at the end of the week. He recently just had surgery, and he is actually still on medication and needs that right now. But, yes, the family is very devastated. They had children that were really excited for him to come home this week.”

Darling asks that, if anyone should see the dog, they call the animal shelter or KPD.

“Chinook is known as a Chiweenie. He’s half Dachshund, half Chihuahua, he does have long hair, and he’s tri-colored with black, tan, and white.”

She says the Kodiak Police Department has a lead, but she can’t elaborate at this time.

You can contact the animal shelter at (907) 486 8077 or the police department at (907) 486 8000.
