Filing Deadline Looms Over Local Elections

Residents interested in filling their evenings serving their neighbors for the next three years have until about 4:30 today to submit their nominating petitions for local office.

On the city level, Councilmen Charlie Davidson and John Whiddon, the incumbents, were the only names in the hat as of late this morning.

On the borough assembly, incumbent Scott Smiley is seeking a full term after being appointed earlier this summer. The other seat coming open belongs to Frank Peterson.

As of this morning, only one challenger’s name is listed in the race for Kodiak Island Borough mayor. Assemblyman Dan Rohrer has filed, but as of air time, incumbent Mayor Jerol Friend had not.

The Kodiak Island Borough School Board has one seat to fill, though there are no takers as of yet.

Jim Pickett has declared for the Fire Protection Area Number 1 Board and Dennis Symmons has done the same in Service Area Number 1.

The municipal election is about seven weeks away on October 4th.
