KHS Sports in Full Swing

Bear LogoIn volleyball, the defending Northern Lights Conference champion Kodiak High School Bears opened the 2016 season with a pair of home losses to the rival Soldotna Stars. The Stars won Friday 25-19, 25-21 and 25-15. Saturday, SoHi won 25-18, 21-25, 25-18 and 25-22. For Kodiak, Ryana Recustodio had seven kills and 22 digs, Zennia Chia had six blocks and Kyla Nocon had 27 digs.

Meanwhile in Soldotna, on the Tsalteshi Trails, the Kodiak cross-country runners found themselves in an unusual position – that is, not in first place. The Kodiak boys, led by a second-place finish by Keith Osowski, placed 5th out of 20 teams at the So-Hi Invite. The Kodiak Girls were 12th, led by Honey Rose Macatuno’s 23rd and Arielle Himmelbloom 29th- place finishes. We have full results below.

On the gridiron, over in the Capital City, the Kodiak Bears asserted their dominance over the Crimson Bears with a fourth quarter drive to steal the win 26-20. The Juneau-Douglas Crimson Bears were blown out in week one by their crosstown rivals, Thunder Mountain High School, but they kept the Kodiak offense out of the end zone in the first half, allowing only an interception for a TD in the second. Trailing 20-18, quarterback Andreas Carros led the team on a ground-pounding drive from deep in Kodiak territory that ended in a three-yard TD run and a two-point conversion for the lead, and ultimately, the win. The victory boosts Kodiak to a record of 2-and-0 and drops Juneau to 0-2.
