City Meeting All About Bonds and Cars

The Kodiak City Council’s upcoming regular meeting will cover a few different financial decisions, including bonds and the purchase of new police cars.

As explained in the meeting packet, the council will look over three different harbor-related resolutions authorizing the city manager to go ahead with bond refunding. Much is reliant on market conditions and therefore subject to change, including the city’s savings. More secure is the potential purchase of three SUVs for the Kodiak Police Department.

According to the meeting packet, the KPD has nine police vehicles and currently needs to replace three of them due to age, mileage, and Kodiak weather. Staff is recommending that the council go ahead and approve the purchase of a new police K9 vehicle for $30,000 and two police patrol vehicles for $60,000.

Another item on the agenda is the termination of the memorandum of agreement the borough and city hold to share one building department. The borough assembly’s decision to revert back to the 1997 uniform building code led to city council discussion about terminating the MOA. The council is unlikely to make a decision at the meeting. City staff is still waiting for the borough assembly to revisit the topic and possibly reconsider its decision. In the packet, city staff recommends postponement.

The council regular meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the assembly chambers tonight, and will be preceded by an executive session regarding city employee unionization. That meeting, unlike the regular meeting, will be not be open to the public.
