bear logo with backgroundThough they weren’t favorites to defend, the Kodiak High School boys cross country team won the Region III title for the 15th consecutive year on Saturday. The feat happened, as it often has, on the TsalteshiTrails in Soldotna. The Bears were led by senior Keith Osowski, who became the 11th straight region winner from Kodiak.

He finished the 5-kilometer course in a time of 16-minutes 10-seconds, which left a gap of 14 seconds between him and the second-place runner from Colony High School. Kodiak’s Jack Hannah was third in 16:41, and Brenden Thompson was 8th in 17:20. Anthony Maghupoy was 15th, Gabe Nummer was 20th to round out the Bears’ top five. As a team they scored 47 points, which was nine better than Colony in second and nearly 30 points better than Wasilla in third. Palmer, Soldotna and Kenai Central rounded the field.

The Kodiak girls were 4th, scoring 68 points. Honey Rose Macatuno, Carly Glover and Arielle Himelbloom were nine, 10, 11 in the standings, with Maddie Christiansen finishing 14th and Katie Parnell in 24th. Kenai Central retained their team title with 42 points, followed by Colony with 50 and Palmer with 62. Behind Kodiak was Wasilla and Soldotna.
