Bears Wrestling Kicks Off with ‘The Altercation;’ KHS Swimmers Continue to Dominate

The Kodiak High School Bears were at a wrestling tournament in Houston called “The Altercation” over the weekend, placing fifth as a team, with 90 points.

The Colony Knights took the tournament with 204 points by winning five different weight classes. Wasilla was second with four weight-class wins at 167 points. Dimond had 110, followed by South Anchorage with 110. Chugiak, Eagle River, Palmer, Grace Christian, Cordova, Bartlett, Houston, Su Valley, Delta, Holy Rosary, Anchorage Christian, Galena and Valdez all competed.

Kodiak High didn’t score any overall victories at The Altercation, but did rein in a couple runners-up in the crowded field. Bryan Gonzalez was second at 113 pounds; Scott Larionoff was third, and Josh Nummer fourth, at 145; Gabe Nummer was second at 152, while Yasuhiro Yamashita and Truxton Troxell were 5th and 6th in the 220-pound class.

In the pool, the Kodiak boys remain unstoppable, and the Kodiak girls nearly so, as they go one-two at the Valley Invite in Palmer.

Led by junior phenom Talon Lindquist, the Kodiak boys racked up 108 points, to Soldotna’s 60, Hutchison’s 46, Colony’s 27 and Kenai’s 18.

Lindquist had individual wins in the 200 freestyle and the 100 backstroke, and relay wins with teammates in the 200- and 400-meter freestyle races.

The Kodiak girls were led by junior star Marina Cummiskey, who won both the 100 and 200 freestyle, and was the anchor on the winning 200 freestyle relay.

Overall, the Kodiak girls scored 63 points to place second to Colony’s 70. Soldotna, Palmer, and North Pole round out the top five.
