One local athlete recently returned victorious from a bowling competition in Anchorage.

Chris Kavanaugh, who’s been participating in Special Olympics since he was a little kid, won 2 gold medals and a silver medal at the Special Olympics Unified Sports Bowling State Championships.

In an interview with KMXT, Kavanaugh gave some insight into how he reached his peak performance before the competition.

“I had to really work hard, too, so I could compete the next day to do really well… There’s always a thing of five minutes of practice where you get to throw your ball, and it doesn’t count until the five minutes is up, and then they push the button and they start the machines.”

As far as practice goes, Kavanaugh is a long-time competitor who’s been bowling for years. So many it’s hard to keep track of, he says.

One of the gold medals was for singles and the other was in the team division, while Kavanaugh won his silver medal in doubles alongside his dad, Dan.

Kavanaugh says he emerged from the competition tired and happy.

He’s also an avid weight-lifter with Special Olympics, but says he’s getting a bit of rest from one sport before turning his attention to training for another.
