Nefarious Deeds Did Not Cause Elk Closure

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game cleared up a rumor that’s been spreading around Kodiak via Facebook and word of mouth.

Last Saturday’s closure to elk hunting registration in the Kodiak area is not the result of one hunter’s massive haul of elk.

Area biologist Nate Svoboda says the closure occurred because they reached their harvest quota, not because of an illegal act.

“The troopers would be all over that if that were the case. That might have stemmed from an incident that we had where an individual shot an elk down in Pasagshak that didn’t have the proper permits, and that’s probably devolved into the rumor, the current rumor, but, no, that’s the first I’ve heard of it.”

Svoboda says the quota is 10 percent of the total elk population, which is 84 of roughly 840 elk.
