The area around Main Elementary is getting a makeover.

Parents had voiced concern over the poor lighting around the school and Kodiak Island Borough School District facilities director Jeff Hansel says staff recently acted on those safety issues.

“We upgraded the street lighting. They were a 100 watt light. We upgraded three of the lights to a 400 watt light to increase the brightness there, and we also added a new light pole to the main entry area for additional lighting.”

Hansel says another area in need of work is the raised walkway from the street to the front of Main Elementary. He says it’s starting to degrade and is not safe to walk on.

The Kodiak Island Borough Assembly will talk about that issue at its work session Tuesday night, which begins at 6:30 p.m. in the borough conference room.
