Assembly to Plan Replanting in Chiniak

The borough has carried out timber salvage in Chiniak since the Twin Creeks fire damaged the forest, and the spruce trees will soon be due for replanting.

The Kodiak Island Borough Assembly will review bids from two companies at its regular meeting Thursday night. Alaska-based Carter & Carter Enterprises bid around $186,300 and the other company, Future Forests, bid about $222,400.

So far, it looks like borough staff is recommending the assembly choose the lower bidder, Carter and Carter Enterprises, which operates out of Coffman Cove on Prince of Wales Island.

Also on the agenda is an ordinance that would switch the borough back to the 2012 International Residential Code. This year, the assembly’s decision to use the 1997 Uniform Building Code instead of the 2012 IRC created conflict with the City of Kodiak, with which the borough shares a building department.

After much consideration, the borough may pass an ordinance that would bring it back to the 2012 IRC for residential buildings, but with exemptions for single-family homes outside city limits.

The regular meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday and will air live on KMXT.
