Weather Delays Safeway Food Shipment

Weather has gotten in the way of some of the food importation to the island, but Kodiak Safeway store manager Mike Murray says staff will work around it.

Usually Safeway receives food shipments on Mondays and Wednesdays, and unloads one extra container of perishables on Fridays.

This coming Monday, Murray says the barge will skip the island due to last week’s weather, which delayed the south-bound barge that was heading to Tacoma to reload and come up back north.

Murray says when the items get to Kodiak is dependent on when they reach Anchorage. He says once that happens, Matson and Safeway will fly the food into Kodiak. Murray says that could happen Tuesday.

Furthermore, he says the Tustemena will call on the city of Kodiak this afternoon, but will bring in two containers of perishables rather than the customary one.
