The public spoke against the sale of two lots of land by Baranof Park at a Kodiak Island Borough Assembly regular meeting in September. The properties were among those that the Borough Lands Committee had identified for sale, zone change, and possible future development. Community members had came forward and identified the lots as ones that should be preserved as a green belt.

Sale of the two lots came again before the assembly at its regular meeting last week.

Assemblyman Matt Van Daele, who sits on the Lands Committee, spoke about the public’s feedback on the properties.

“These two have been unequivocally identified by the public as not being surplus to the public need – needing to be retained for public use. I consider that this is a very resounding success because not only the number of lots that the committee recommended, only these two were taken out, but also because of all the members of the public that stepped up and told us what they thought.”

The assembly agreed to respect the public’s wishes regarding the two lots, and voted against the lot disposal 0 – 7.
