City Council to Look Over Budget Items at Special Meeting

The city may not be able to afford two new human resources employees and choose instead to stick with advertising for just one. The Kodiak City Council will work that out at a special meeting tonight.

Back in December, the council voted to hire both a Human Resource Administrative Specialist and a Human Resource Manager to help with the administration’s increased work load. In February, the council decided the former would be a little bit much for the current state of the budget. Tonight, it’ll vote on whether to remove the job of administrative specialist and move ahead with just the position of Human Resource Manager.

The choice to hire a human resource manager falls under the city council budget goals for Fiscal Year 2018, which the council will review at the meeting. The draft encourages consistency with the current fiscal year. For instance, it states that the general operating fund expenses for this coming fiscal year should be the same as FY2017 and that the amount the city uses to fund nonprofits should also remain the same: 1 percent of the general fund.

The council will then look at the status of the Shared Fisheries Business Tax Program and, in the meeting packet, staff recommends that the distribution method of those taxes be the same as in previous years.

According to a letter from the State Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development, the Kodiak Management Area will receive an estimated amount of roughly $247,100 from state fish taxes collected outside municipal boundaries.

The city council’s special meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Kodiak Public Library multi-purpose room.
