Salmon fishermen waiting for disaster relief funds for the 2016 pink salmon season are being told they’ll have to keep waiting. This after being told they could expect their relief checks at the first of the year.

Hooligan are a loved, but little understood fish that’s vital for many subsistence users. We look at a study to learn more about the fish which cause a spring time frenzy when they return to spawn.

And finally, the Coast Guard have had a number of successful rescues of fishermen the past several weeks. One vessel, the Masonic, had conducted safety drills just hours before the longliner got into trouble. The result: All five crewmembers were airlifted safely to Sitka.

We had help from Claire Stremple at KHNS in Haines. Robert Woolsey at KCAW in Sitka, and Kavitha George here at KMXT in Kodiak.

Whether you fish commercially, sport fish, or fish for subsistence, remember safety drills can mean the difference between getting home without a scratch, or not getting home at all.
