Japanese whale research ship visits Kodiak over weekend

A Japanese research vessel with a history of alleged whaling violations was in Kodiak over the weekend. The Yushin Maru No. 2 was tied up at the Ferry Dock early Saturday.

The large blue ship had the word “Research” painted in white on its side and carried a banner of the International Whaling Commission.

Numerous videos on YouTube, many posted by the controversial Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, allegedly show the Yushin Maru No. 2 illegally fishing whales during the 2008 to 2010-time frame.

Locally, the ship’s visit sparked numerous conversations on social media both supporting the ship and its work, and those opposed to whaling.

A rumor had spread on Saturday that someone called in a threat against the vessel, but Kodiak Police Department Spokesman Lt. Francis de la Fuente said that no threat was reported to KPD.
