Animal Shelter Has New Manager

Mary Donaldson/KMXT

The Humane Society in Kodiak has a new shelter manger that has new plans on the horizon for the animal shelter to continue its mission to prevent animal cruelty and promote pet education. Mary Donaldson has more.

(Nat Sound Intro :05s “…fades down.”)

Rebecca Martines started her first day as the shelter manager the beginning of this month. She brings her previous shelter management experience, having run an animal shelter in Ketchikan. She’s been in Kodiak for about a year now, and plans help the shelter continue to achieve its goals, and to incorporate a few ideas of her own. She says she is just beginning to tackle her new job.

(Becky 1 :23s “…wherever I’m needed.”)

She also says a main goal of the shelter is to do more in the community. One current program she hopes to expand on is the foster family program.

(Becky 2 :24s “…help us foster the animals.”)

She also says she would like to build up public education around town by coordinating more school education programs on responsible pet care. The shelter already works with seniors and the disabled in town by arranging visits with the pets.

Martines says what will be new is increased advertising for pets at the shelter.

(Becky 4 :22s “…for a longer period of time.”)

Ultimately though, Martines says it is community support that really helps keep the shelter up and running, along with the city and borough’s support. She says this is how they continue to run the spaying and neutering programs, are able to provide medical care and all of the other daily needs for the shelter animals.

She says she has big shoes to fill coming into the shelter manager position, but that she looks forward to the challenges.

(Becky 5 :28s “…we’re here for the community.”)

The shelter’s previous manager was Kathy Daquilinea, who managed the shelter for 13 years. Anyone interested in donating, time, money, goods or services or to coordinate an educational presentation can stop by the Humane Society of Kodiak’s Animal Shelter located at 2409 Mill Bay Road Tuesday through Saturday.

I’m Mary Donaldson.
