KHS Volleyball Team Has High Hopes For Season

Play

Mary Donaldson/KMXT

The Kodiak High School Volleyball team started practicing August 11th and will be having their first region games next week. Mary Donaldson has more.

The varsity squad for this season’s Kodiak High School volleyball team is stacked. On the roster are a total of eight seniors and two juniors. Rick Carman has been the team’s head coach since 2004. He says he predicts a high level of playing skills on this years varsity team, which will lead to a great season.

(Carman 4 :25s “…great season for sure.”)

Other teams in the region are already playing competitive games against one another. But Carman says the volleyball camps he held this summer for his players has helped keep them in fresh form.

(Carman 2 :19s “…more advanced things.”)

Carman says he can’t single out any one player who will lead the team, since all of the players contribute to the team’s success.

(Carman 3 :31 “…they’re on the court.”)

Many of the girls on the volleyball squad also look forward to working together as a team and having a successful season. Varsity senior Linzee Burcham says she thinks this year’s squad will work well together.

(Linzee 1 :25s “…so much skill”)

Nina Krumrey is also a senior for the girl’s varsity squad. She says all three teams are talented this year.

(Nina 1 :08s “…really cool this year.”)

Carman says there were more girls who tried out for the team this season, and that between the Varsity, JV and C-teams, the number of players increased from last season’s 28 to this year’s 36. The coach says all teams will have phenomenal talent. Their first games for region play will be on the road in Wasilla next weekend. Team captains will be picked sometime next week before they travel to the mainland.

I’m Mary Donaldson.
