The Baranov Museum has another event scheduled to help celebrate the Erskine House’s 200 year anniversary. Mary Donaldson has more.

A community praznik will take place Sunday at Sargent Park, right next to Kodiak’s historic Erskine House. Katie Oliver, the Baranov Museum’s executive director says praznik is a Russian word.

(Oliver 1 :13s “…that’s what we’re doing here.”)

The praznik will be another of the many public celebrations that the museum has scheduled for the bicentennial year festivities. Oliver says they have many musical talents playing at the event, both local and from out of town.

(Oliver 2 :21s “…of favorite songs.”)

She also says they will have some old fashioned games for kids to enjoy in the park.

(Oliver 3 :17s “…green space downtown.”)

A salmon barbeque is also scheduled, with donations of salmon from the Kodiak Chamber of Commerce Star of Kodiak program and other local businesses.

Originally known as the Russian American Magazin, the Erskine House is the oldest building in the state of Alaska. It was originally constructed in 1808 as a warehouse for the Russian-American Company’s storage of sea otter furs before their transit to markets in China and Russia. The praznik begins at noon on Sunday in Sargent Park.

I’m Mary Donaldson.
