Bears Sweep At Homer

Jay Barrett/KMXT

The Kodiak High School girls swimming team is so good, they won all but two events at a Homer meet on Friday. Those were the one-meter diving and 100-meter butterfly events. Kodiak’s team score was 142 to Homer’s 130. Wasilla had 46 and Palmer 11.

The Bears spread the winning around, with Karen Philpot winning the 100 and 200 freestyle, Celeste Beck-Goodell took the 200 individual medley, Laura Griffing the 500 freestyle, Elyse Johnston the 100 backstroke and Myra Scholze the 100 breaststroke.

In some events, the Bears are their only competition. While Kyla Young won the 50 freestyle in 26.47 seconds, Griffing was just one-onehundreth of a second behind, and Johnston just 16-onehundreths behind her. They all finished in less than a fifth of a second from each other.

Philpot, Griffing, Young and Johnston teamed up to win the 200 medley relay, while Johnston, Beck-Goodell, Philpot and Griffing won the 400 freestyle relay.

The Kodiak boys also won the team title in convincing fashion, with 131 points to Homer’s 98. Wasilla had 89 and Palmer 10.

Nando Macinko won both the 50 and 100 freestyle races, while Scott Wundersee won the 1 meter diving event. Quinn Langfitt, Hayden Linscheid, Devon Christiansen, and Eric Friccero teamed up to win the 400 freestyle relay.
