Kodiak girls wrestlers faired well at the Alaska Girls Wrestling State Championships at Chugiak High School over the weekend. Two Kodiak wrestlers won state titles, Chloe Ivanoff and Gloria Roe, and Kodiak took an unprecedentedly high four girls to the tournament.

Pat Costello is the Kodiak High School wrestling coach. He said he was proud of the efforts of the four Kodiak wrestlers who took part in the state tournament.

(Wrestling 1 16 sec. "We had a really good weekend … a couple that decided not to.")

Costello said that Roe, who along with Chloe Ivanoff, took home a state title after going 2-and-2 in the round robin meet, provided the pleasant surprise of the tournament.

(Wrestling 2 28 sec. "Kind of the surprise … giving up quite a bit of weight.")

Ivanoff won the state title, going 3-and-0 in the 111-pound weight class over wrestlers from Wasilla and Service, and Roe won the 152-pound class over two wrestlers from Wasilla. Gaby Serrano came in second in the 120-pound weight class, and Marie Cabell came in third at 104-pounds. Costello said the state match marked the end of the girls wrestling season and the girls are now wrestling freestyle in the evenings through the school’s youth club.
