A Halibut Tail Tale

Erik Wander/KMXT

The Kodiak Island Convention and Visitors Bureau is currently accepting proposals for artistic renderings on halibut tails. Ten artists will receive halibut tail forms to be stylized in the medium of their choice and put on public display and auctioned off in May.

KMXT’s Erik Wander has more.

The halibut tails will be displayed publicly in Kodiak for two weeks prior to the KICVB’s May 16th Chocolate Lovers Fling, at which they will be put on auction for members of the public. Janet Buckingham, executive director of the Kodiak Island Convention and Visitors Bureau, said the fundraising event for the non-profit organization will have a different character this year as a result of the halibut tail contest and auction and that some of the proceeds will go to KICVB and some will go to participating artists.

(Buckingham 1 50 sec. "We will be distributing … come back to KICVB.")

She said the fundraiser will also include contests related to chocolate, something that KICVB hasn’t tried in years past at fundraising events.

(Buckingham 2 32 sec. "There will be a contest … chocolate, wine and music.")

Buckingham said she hopes to distribute the tails, life-sized taxidermy forms, to the selected artists as soon as possible after they are chosen so that they will have enough time to create their artwork and display it publicly for two weeks prior to the May 16th fundraiser.

(Buckingham 3 26 sec. "The decision will be … life-size halibut tail.")

Artists interested in submitting a proposal for one of the 10 life-sized halibut tail forms should submit a one-page proposal to KICVB by March 12th, either by email, mail or by stopping in.
