AMSEA Training in Larsen Bay

Erik Wander/KMXT

The Alaska Marine Safety Education Association will conduct a two-day Emergency Procedures and Onboard Drill Conductor Course to meet Coast Guard requirements on fishing vessels on Monday, February 9th and Tuesday, February 10th in Larson Bay. The course is free for licensed commercial fishermen.

AMSEA has historically provided training to mariners each winter, before the start of the fishing season.

The two-day course will include instruction on cold water survival skills, use of EPIRBS, flares and maydays. Also included in the discussion will be overboard recovery, shipboard firefighting and vessel flooding control. Finally, the proper use of immersion suits, personal flotation devices and life rafts will be discussed, as will helicopter evacuation, emergency drills and abandon ship procedures.

Participants will meet Monday evening in Larson Bay from 6 to 8 pm and all day Tuesday. For more information or to register for the course, people can contact instructor Steven Campbell in AMSEA’S Kodiak office.
