Bears Sweep Panthers

The Kodiak High School Bears had a rare weekend when both the boys and girls varsity swept their opponents. The Skyview Panthers from Soldotna brought their C-Team, JV and varsity to town for a dozen games.

At the varsity level, the Kodiak defense shined. The Lady Bears held the Panthers to seven points in the second half on Friday night – with none coming in the third period at all. Kodiak went on to win 43 to 27. Rachel Norton and Emily Garner each had nine points, with Loretta Timpke adding eight.

The boys had almost as good a third quarter defensively on Friday, holding Skyview to five points, on the way to a 68-to-49 win. Sophomore Rafael Matautia had 17 points, almost all from inside the paint. David Diocares had 16 and Erin Domingo added 11. Together, those two players rained down a half-dozen three-pointers. Mikel Garner had 10 points in a just a few minutes late in the game.

On Saturday, the Lady Bears defense was strong from the beginning, holding Skyview to just one bucket in the first, as Kodiak cruised to a 49-28 win. Norton once again led the Bears with 13 points.

The Kodiak boys had a tougher time on Saturday, but held on to win 57-to-50. Matautia had 14 points, with Mark Galindo adding 13 and Diocares a dozen.

The Kodiak boys will play Thursday in Wasilla, and then at Homer on Friday and Saturday. The girls will be in Houston for one game on Saturday.

Next week, Kodiak will host the Region Three Tournament for both the boys and girls. Teams from Wasilla, Palmer, Colony, Kenai, Soldotna, Skyview and Homer will come to the rock for the double-elimination tournament March 5th through 7th.
