Members of the Kodiak Parks and Recreation Committee updated the Kodiak Island Borough Assembly on its Master Trails Plan at the assembly’s work session Thursday evening, saying it intends to move forward with creating a plan for foot and bike trails across the Kodiak road system.
The committee plans to review requests for proposals from contractors eager to carry out the plans once they are finalized. Pam Foreman, a member of the Parks and Recreation Committee spoke at the meeting, describing precisely what the plan will entail.

Foreman said the plan, which would focus both on urban and remote areas of the road system, brings up the issue of land-use and land codes, which often can be complex. She said it’s something the master plan and a consultant the committee hopes to hire would have to address.

The Borough’s director of community development Bud Cassidy said the process of creating such a plan has been a priority for both the committee and the assembly for quite some time. He said the cost of the project is as yet uncertain until a contractor is chosen.

Cassidy said funding for the project will come from the borough’s budget and that the assembly will have to vote on whether to fund it. Foreman said she hopes to see the project come to pass before her term on the Parks and Recreation Committee ends in 2010.
