What it Takes to Clear the City Streets

Last week’s storm dumped an unprecedented amount of snow on Kodiak, wreaking havoc with everyday life. Even on Friday, road crews were still hauling snow from city streets. KMXT’s Jay Barrett went on a ride-along with Joe Henderson, one of the city’s dump truck drivers, to find out more about the process of clearing our streets.

The city of Kodiak’s Public Works Maintenance Supervisor, Chris Lund, said the city’s five trucks make about 325 trips in a 13-hour day. With an average of 20,000 pounds in each load, the city is removing over six-million pounds of snow from the roads each day.
