On this week’s show, the U.S. Attorney General wants former Senator Ted Stevens’ conviction thrown out; The North Pacific Fishery Management Council is meeting right now in Anchorage; and shrimp fishing is returning to Prince William Sound. Congratulations to our regular contributors who won Alaska Press Club Awards last week: Anne Hillman in Unalaska , Bonnie Sue Hitchcock in Sitka, and both Joe Viechnicki and Matt Lichtenstein in Petersburg were honored for their outstanding work.
The Alaska Fisheries Report was awarded third place for Best Ongoing Public Affairs Program by the Press Club. It’s the second year in a row we’ve been so honored. Judge Gabriel Spitzer, a WBEZ Chicago reporter, and a name familiar to Alaska Public Radio listeners as a former host of APRN’s news magazine AK, wrote: "Not always the sexiest subject matter, but AFR does a solid job of crafting a comprehensive news source for fishing interests." The programs that finished in front of the Alaska Fisheries Report this year are the Alaska Teen Media Institute’s "In Other News," and radio station KRUA’s "Cabin Fever."
