Once again this year the Alaska Department of Public Safety has issued an emergency order extending the deadline for removing studded tires from cars driven on roads in southern Alaska, including Kodiak Island.
The standard deadline for Kodiak is April 15th, but given the heavy snow, Commissioner Joe Masters has moved the deadline back to May 1st, just as it is for cars driving on roads in mainland Alaska. It’s the second year in a row such an extension has been made.
Masters said the extension should provide motorists with an additional margin of safety on lingering winter roads.
After May 1st, the fine for driving with studs is 50-dollars for each tire.
