Kodiak Bears Dominate in Juneau

Jay Barrett/KMXT

The Kodiak Bears were one-two at the track and field meet in Juneau over the weekend. The boys dominated the field of nine schools with 286 points to second-place Juneau’s 182. The Kodiak girls were neck-and-neck with Juneau until the end, though the Crimson Bears won with 205 points to Kodiak’s 196.

The boys were led by junior Karsten Schick and senior Trevor Dunbar, both of whom had four first-place finishes, either individually or with teammates.

Schick leapt 6-feet in the high jump, won the 110-meter hurdles, the 400-meter race, and was on the winning 4×400 relay team with Dunbar, Sam Salus and Christian Zarate. Dunbar was also first in the 800, 1600 and 3200 meter races. He ran 4-minutes 10-point-78-seconds in the 1600, which is about 30-feet short of a mile.

The boys also took first in the 4×200 meter relay.

Behind Kodiak and Juneau-Douglas were Haines, Sitka, Petersburg, Ketchikan, Gustavus, Yakutat and Mount Edgecumbe.

On the girls’ side, senior Linzee Burcham won the 400-meter race and senior Keeley Wall won the triple jump with a distance of 31-feet, 5-point-5 inches. The Lady Bears dominated the relays, winning the 4×200, 4×400, and 4×800 events, and were second in the 4×100.

Following the Juneau and Kodiak girls were Sitka, Haines, Ketchikan, Petersburg and Mount Edgcumbe.

The next challenge for the Bears will be hosting Anchorage Christian School and Bartlett.
