Jay Barrett/KMXT

As part of the ongoing KMXT Concert Series, Alaska blues legend Gary Sloan will be performing a benefit concert Saturday night at the Mecca here in Kodiak. Jay Barrett has more.

Gary Sloan and his band will be joined on stage by Kodiak drummer Bear Becker, when they perform Saturday night at the Mecca Lounge. As an extra added bonus, it’ll be a no-smoking show. Tickets for this KMXT benefit concert are available at our studios and at The Treasury on the Mall.

(Music in)

Known to some as "Alaska Slim," Gary Sloan was a year-round fixture in the Alaska Blues scene for decades. Saturday night’s concert is by no means his first visit to Kodiak – he first appeared here with John Lee Hooker in 1971.

(Sloan 1 20 sec "Every time I come over … what it does for a community.")

These days, Sloan lives in Arkansas, where he’s involved in blues music production:

(Sloan 2 43 sec "For 10 years I’ve been an MC … a dream job, you know?")

Though he winters in Arkansas, he returns to Alaska every summer, and he has several other dates on this tour of the state after he plays Kodiak:

(Sloan 3 32 sec "We go to Anchorage on July 31st … heat index of 105.")
